Cluj - a city with a colourful history

Cluj-Napoca, normally shortened to Cluj, is known in German as Klausenburg. It's the capital of the Cluj region in Transylvania and one of Romania's largest cities. It lies on the banks of the Someşul Mic river (Little Someş) and its historic centre offers visitors a long and fascinating history going back to the 12th century. Nowadays Cluj is one of the most important cultural, economic and academic centres of Romania. It is one of the most distinguished university towns in Europe, home to the Babeş-Bolyai University, where lessons are given in German, Romanian and Hungarian.

Tip: Most of the places of interest in Cluj are close to the centre and can be easily reached on foot.
